In the spirit of covering a wide variety of areas associated with hunting, wild game and the outdoors, we like to highlight the various figures that are part of our experience. After recently visiting a taxidermist friend, I got to thinking about their importance.  The taxidermist certainly continues to play an integral role in the outdoor world and no doubt represents a worthy topic – and a good post-season one at that.  In fact, we plan to occasionally spotlight individual taxidermists from time to time.

First off, what is taxidermy?  In doing a little simple research, the word taxidermy is derived from the ancient Greek words taxis, which means movement. derma means skin with the resulting combination of course referring to the movement of skin. Back in the day, the taxidermy process was rough around the edges – to put it mildly.  Animal hides were typically tanned, skinned, stuffed with straw and sawdust and sewed back together.  The end product left a little to be desired.

While some folks have morbid thoughts of blood and guts, modern-day taxidermy basically only uses the skin and antlers, as the other matter has been previously discarded. Today, taxidermy involves various equipment and skills such as molding, casting, woodworking, sculpting and air-brushing.  It requires artistic talent and a good knowledge of an animal’s anatomy. Yes, taxidermists are true artists in their own right and play a meaningful role in not only preserving the animals we harvest, but the outdoor memories we share.

Consider just how much trust the sportsman places in this artist to protect and preserve their trophies and memories.  It’s astounding really.  Many hunting enthusiasts will no doubt consider their mounted deer and other animals among their most precious possessions – and for good reason!

Needless to say, if you have a good taxidermist, hold on to him or her – and tell them thanks for the work they do.
