On the other end of the spectrum, take in a sunset, sunrise or star-filled night sky. With these things in mind, here is a short list to consider.
Rough Creek Lodge: Glen Rose, Texas
This Texas nugget’s remote location and beauty is matched only by its countless outdoor opportunities. One can participate in a myriad of outdoor activities, including hiking, biking and fishing. But this only scratches the surface. Guests can also partake in sporting clays, paintball, zip-lining and four-wheeler rides, just to name a few.

At over 11,000 acres, this large slice of Texas heaven has over 60 ponds and a five-mile nature trail. Hiking is highlighted by a 137-step staircase to the summit of Gunn Mountain for a majestic view for day-trippers and stargazers alike.
The ranch and lodge also deliver in the relaxation area, with swimming, a lazy river, sunset tours and spa services. If you’re wondering about food, the Rough Creek Lodge boasts an incredible dining experience with many offerings, including scrumptious wild game. Parents wanting to steal a little time for themselves can enjoy adult libations of their choice in the rustic, yet exquisite lodge – all while the kids enjoy the “kid’s ranch”. Lake Whitney State Park: Whitney, Texas
Located on the south end of Lake Whitney, this scenic state park is teaming with wildlife and nature. It lies on the Washita Prairie, featuring gently rolling grasslands, oak mottes and rugged limestone outcrops. Whether camping in tents, RVs or screened-shelter cabins, Texas nature and beauty abounds. The shelter campsites in particular are accompanied by an abundance of mature oaks, offering relief from the Texas heat.
The park offers hiking, fishing, boating and biking. To top it off, there is a generous stretch of well-maintained beach for swimming. Other good family activities include ranger programs, as well as Saturday night “star parties”, where guests gather with lawn chairs at dark to view the vast Texas sky. For the outdoorsman, there is quality fishing from the banks and plenty of local guides offering boat fishing for white and black bass, striper, crappie and catfish. Lake Whitney also features a multitude of trails.
As is common with other state parks, Lake Whitney State park represents an affordable alternative with rates ranging from $10 to $30 per night – great value amid the beautiful native Texas landscape.
Y.O. Ranch: Mountain Home, Texas
In the heart of the Texas Hill Country, the Legendary Y.O. Ranch and Headquarters provides a touch of the past with the modern comforts of home. In fact, some of the cabins even date back to the 1880’s. Steeped in history, the Y.O. Ranch remained the property of the Schreiner Family since 1880 when Captain Charles A. Schreiner began amassing the 566,000 acres of ranch land in the aftermath of the Civil War.
The ranch is the home of a multitude of wild game and offers many hunting opportunities. In fact, the large amount of exotic game means that a healthy variety of hunting prospects exist during the summer. It’s a sportsman’s paradise. Here, hunting can be done with rifle, black powder, bow and handgun. It’s no wonder that hunting legend Ted Nugent frequently films and hunts on the ranch – with great success, of course.
In addition to great summertime hunting, guests can also indulge in horseback riding and wildlife tours. The latter features many game and non-game animals from around the world. It’s a photographer’s dream and is fun for all ages. For these and other reasons, this historic Lone Star gem is a great getaway for the outdoorsman and family.
